Saree Care
A handwoven saree, cared for properly, lasts for decades and often outlives the person who bought it. These are the habits that make the difference.
Washing
Dry clean your silk sarees, especially for the first few washes. Cotton and linen sarees may be gently hand washed in cold water with a mild detergent. Never scrub, wring or brush the fabric, and wash dark colours separately for the first few washes as some bleeding is normal.
Drying
Dry in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes and weakens the fibre. Do not hang a wet silk saree by its edge, as the weight of the water distorts the weave. Lay it flat or drape it over a broad surface.
Ironing
Use a low to medium heat and always place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree. Never iron directly over zari, as the heat damages the metallic thread.
Storage
Store sarees in a cool, dry place, wrapped in a soft cotton cloth rather than plastic, which traps moisture. Refold your sarees every three to four months so permanent creases do not set along the same lines.
Zari care
Keep zari away from moisture and perfume, both of which tarnish it. If zari darkens over time, a specialist dry cleaner can often restore it.
Everyday handling
Apply perfume and deodorant before draping, not after. Remove stains promptly by blotting, never rubbing, and take the saree to a dry cleaner rather than treating a stain at home.
